This is the time of year when I start researching and making decisions for the next homeschool year. We usually purchase curriculum with our tax refund, so I like to have the major decisions made well before then.
Honestly, it is one of my favorite times of year.
I love slowing down to research, read reviews, and explore new curriculum options. I love imagining what the next school year could look like. This season is also about reflection. It is a chance to look honestly at what is working, what is not, and what simply needs a refresh.
This year, that reflection has led me to rethink Jack’s math curriculum.
We are currently using Saxon Math. While I appreciate the philosophy behind it, the reality has felt heavy, especially in the younger grades. The lesson setup is overwhelming. I am spending hours preparing lessons, gathering materials, and getting ready before we even begin. Once we sit down, the lessons themselves take a long time, and Jack is expected to complete three worksheets a day. It feels tedious for him and exhausting for both of us.
I do not think Saxon is a bad curriculum. In fact, I can absolutely see us returning to it someday. For now, though, it is no longer serving our daily rhythm.
So I have been researching alternatives.
One curriculum that keeps rising to the top is Singapore Dimensions Math. It has an excellent reputation, the textbooks are colorful and engaging, and the lessons feel more focused and intentional. I also appreciate that there is an optional video component available through Nicole the Math Lady, which offers extra support without replacing the parent teacher role.
After weeks of reading, comparing, and imagining what our days might feel like, I am confident this is the direction we want to go for the upcoming year.
This season of planning reminds me why I love homeschooling so much. It is flexible. It allows us to pause, reassess, and choose what best supports our child, not only academically but emotionally and rhythmically as well.
That feels like a very good place to be.
