The Gift of Slowing Down in Homeschooling

As we head into the week before Christmas break, we’re slowing things down, choosing connection, cozy lessons, and joyful learning over pressure. A gentle reminder that going easy is part…

We’re in that stretch right before Christmas break — the week where everyone can feel it coming. The break, the rest, the slowing down. We’re definitely ready for it over here, so we’ve been keeping our school days lighter and lower stress than usual.

Today we worked on a project from an oceans unit by Knowledge Crate, and it was exactly what we needed. Something hands-on, interesting, and fun without feeling like “push, push, push.” Sacramento is especially cold today, so we spent a lot of the morning under my heater blanket with hot cocoa, good books, and plenty of time just being together while learning happened naturally around us.

Days like this remind me why I love homeschooling so much.

I truly believe it’s okay (and even good) to go easy once in a while. Not every school day has to be rigorou

s or perfectly structured. Sometimes the magic of homeschooling is being able to slow down, follow curiosity, and enjoy the simple parts of learning together. We can go at our own pace, adjust when we need to, and make space for connection alongside academics.

Especially this time of year, those little moments matter. The warmth, the conversations, the shared projects, the memories that sneak in between lessons. That’s the part of homeschooling I want to remember (and the part I hope my son Jack, remembers too).

This

season feels like a good reminder that learning doesn’t have to be heavy to be meaningful.
