It is officially second grade homeschool curriculum season in our home.
Each year around tax refund time, we purchase our homeschool curriculum for the upcoming school year. I genuinely love this season of researching, comparing options, and imagining what our days will look like.
Next school year, Jack will be in second grade. After a lot of thought and research, here is our complete second grade homeschool curriculum lineup and why we chose each subject.

Second Grade Phonics Curriculum

All About Reading Level 3

For phonics, we are continuing with All About Reading Level 3. Levels 1 and 2 have worked beautifully for Jack, so it was an easy decision to keep going.
We use the color edition, and the hands-on activities have made reading engaging rather than frustrating. When the binder is set up ahead of time, the program becomes very open and go. Each lesson takes about twenty minutes, which keeps it manageable and consistent.
If you are looking for a structured but gentle second grade phonics curriculum, this has been a great fit for us.

Second Grade Spelling Curriculum

All About Spelling Level 2

For spelling, we are continuing with All About Spelling Level 2. Like their reading program, it includes hands-on components and built-in review that work well for Jack’s learning style.
Once prepared in advance, the lessons are simple to pull out and begin. There is no scrambling for materials, which helps our homeschool day run smoothly.
This pairing of All About Reading and All About Spelling has created a strong language arts foundation for our second grade year.

Second Grade Math Curriculum

Singapore Dimensions Math with Nicole the Math Lady

For math, we are continuing with Singapore Dimensions Math. We switched to this program late this year and have loved it so far.
Singapore focuses on deep understanding by using manipulatives and teaching multiple strategies for solving a single equation. I have noticed real growth in Jack’s confidence and comprehension.
We pair Singapore Dimensions Math with Nicole the Math Lady’s video lessons. She walks through each lesson step by step and models sample problems clearly. This combination has been incredibly helpful. It allows Jack to work more independently while still receiving strong instruction.
If you are researching second grade math curriculum options, this combination has been a wonderful fit for our family.

Second Grade History Curriculum

Notgrass – Our Star Spangled Story

For history, we chose Notgrass Our Star Spangled Story. After watching reviews and previewing samples, I was immediately drawn to its hands-on approach.
Nearly every lesson includes projects and activities, many involving building with blocks. Since Jack loves creating and constructing, this felt like a natural fit.
The curriculum also includes beautiful read-aloud books that bring American history to life. For families looking for a literature-rich second grade history curriculum, this is a lovely option.

To support those building activities, I purchased a set of Melissa and Doug wooden blocks that will be reserved specifically for school time. I love the neutral tones and the larger size of the blocks. Having a dedicated set just for homeschool makes the activities feel special and intentional.
The curriculum also suggests using high quality colored pencils for map work and illustrations. We chose Faber Castell colored pencils, which I have always found to be durable, vibrant, and worth the investment.

Second Grade Science Curriculum

Elemental Science – Biology for the Grammar Stage

After researching many second grade science curriculum options, we chose Elemental Science Biology for the Grammar Stage. It includes weekly demonstrations and offers lapbooking as an alternative to heavy notebooking.
The lessons appear structured but manageable. I was also extremely impressed with their customer service. When a kit item arrived damaged, they responded quickly and replaced it without hesitation.
That kind of support matters when choosing homeschool curriculum.

Enrichment and Subscription Learning

Knowledge Crate

In addition to our core second grade homeschool curriculum, we continue to use Knowledge Crate subscription boxes.
These themed educational boxes include every single item needed for each activity. From books to supplies, nothing is left out. The attention to detail is impressive.
We loved it so much that we ordered additional past boxes and an annual subscription.

Second Grade Literature

Memoria Press – StoryTime Treasures

For literature, we chose Memoria Press StoryTime Treasures. I appreciate their classical approach to reading and discussion.
This program may be slightly above Jack’s independent reading level at the start of second grade, but we plan to begin gently and adjust if needed. One of the benefits of homeschooling is flexibility.

This is our complete second grade homeschool curriculum plan for the upcoming school year. I am excited for the growth, learning, and fresh beginnings ahead.
If you are planning your own second grade homeschool curriculum, I hope this overview helps as you research and make decisions for your family.
